When Your Work Bestie Comes Back

Dearest friend,

Last year, my work bestie left to pursue other ventures. Although I supported her, the space she left behind was real.

This year, she came back and oh… what a gift that has been. There is something deeply comforting about working with someone who complements you, who understands your rhythm and knows when to step in and when to step back. Someone who can read your face across the ward without you saying a word.

Some shifts are filled with laughter and shared snacks in between patients. Quick coffee sips at the nurses’ station. Whispered debriefs after a difficult case. Those small moments that make long hours lighter. But nursing is not all laughter. It is pressure and urgency. It is emotional weight. It is carrying other people’s hardest days. That is where having the right person beside you matters most.

We help each other through stressful situations. We step in when one feels overwhelmed. We remind each other to breathe. We double-check meds when the ward feels chaotic. We stand shoulder to shoulder when things feel heavy.

Of course, we are human too. There are days when PMS is real. Days when emotions sit close to the surface. Days when one of us is quieter than usual. We have learned that working together is a balance. Some days my mood dips. Other days hers does. Instead of taking it personally, we communicate it.“I’m a bit low today.” “I’m just tired.” “Give me a minute.”

Simple honesty.

That honesty has built trust.

We’ve learned that partnership at work is not about perfection. It’s about awareness and knowing each other well enough to navigate moods, stress, and pressure without damaging the relationship.

Nursing can be incredibly stressful. It stretches you emotionally, mentally, and physically, but when you have someone you work well with, someone who supports you, laughs with you and carries the load with you, it changes everything.

It doesn’t remove the stress, but it softens it. Her coming back reminded me how much our work environment is shaped by the people beside us.

Skills matter.

Experience matters.

But connection?

That matters too.

With love,
